Puppy Toilet Training: Finding a System That Works
When you bring in a new puppy to your family, it not only means a lot of joy to the family, but also means plenty of commitment. Puppies are capable of adding quite a bit to the family and that does not exclude work. Once you decide to get the puppy, you should also be ready to set aside the initial time necessary for imparting toilet training to the puppy. Time allocation and time management will be the first step towards making the canine addition to the family.
Some Ideas for Puppy Toilet Training
The type of puppy toilet training that you would adopt should be decided even before getting the new puppy. There are several ways to give Toilet Training to your Puppy. Whatever the method, the owner’s time is a pre-requisite. The owner may need to be with the puppy for major part of the initial days. You will then be devoting keen attention to the puppy’s signals. Your puppy will have to be trained to learn the door that it should use to go outside the house for relieving itself. With this method, you would actually take the puppy outside the house for a leash, to a designated spot in the yard and encourage the puppy to remember what is expected of it. Make sure that you praise your puppy when ever it does something good. Never allow the puppy to play around until it has finished its excretion.
Employing the paper method for puppy toilet training is another option. This method involves laying papers in a pre designated spot for the puppy to use. Special papers are available for this with many pet stores. If you opt to use the special papers, the scent in the paper will draw the puppy towards it whenever it has the urge. But, in the initial stages of this training, the owner will look out for the puppy’s signals and lead the puppy towards the paper. As the training progresses and the puppy picks up the habit, you can keep reducing the paper and eventually move the paper closer to the exit door. When you do this, soon you will be leading the puppy out of the house for excretion.
If ever you catch your puppy excreting in a space that is not demarcated for the purpose, do not yell at it. Because, yelling will not help either you or the puppy; the reason is, the canine will not understand why you are angry with him. Instead, you can tell him a firm ‘no’ and then lead him out of the house. Once he is finished, make sure to praise him by giving a pat. Puppies respond faster to positive reinforcements rather than punishment.
It can be a few weeks before you can complete your puppy toilet training. But, when you are finished, the new addition to the family would have fully understood what is expected of him. |
